Oversized heat pump: why bigger is not better

Short cycling, poor humidity control, wear: what an oversized heat pump costs you, and how to choose the right size.

Facing Canadian winters, the instinct is to go bigger “to be safe”. With a heat pump, that is often a mistake.

What happens with an oversized unit

What about the coldest days?

The design temperature is only exceeded a few hours a year. Inverter heat pumps modulate their output: a right-sized unit runs long at low speed, where it is most efficient. For the rare peaks, your existing heating (baseboards, furnace) takes over.

The balance point

The calculator shows the temperature down to which the heat pump is enough on its own: the balance point. Below it, backup heat fills in. Good sizing puts that point close to your city’s design temperature.
